On asking the mother in law for help…

March 3, 2017

Okay, I should start this post by saying I like my mother in law. Whenever I hear other people’s horror stories about their in laws, I always thank my lucky stars that my mother in law isn’t like that. We visit with Little M every weekend and I take mother in law food shopping every week too.

But there’s one thing I just can’t bring myself to do: ask her for help. On Monday we did our weekly food shop and I was saying about how Mondays are always chaotic as Little M is always a little harder work (I think she struggles to adjust to daddy not being around all day after the weekend) and I have to get two food shops done (we go to Aldi together in the morning, then rush back for lunch, then I do a Tesco click and collect in the afternoon for the gluten free bread, lactose free milk, formula milk and nappies). I usually try to do some kind of slow cooker dinner as well so this generally means running around like a loon, pulling the refrigerated items out of the shopping and leaving the rest in the middle of the kitchen floor until hubby gets home.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who has days like this?

Anyway, mother in law very kindly said, “if you need me to do anything, or look after M while you get things done, just ring and I’ll come round”. I know, lovely, right? But I just can’t say yes. I can’t. Even though the whole house needs hoovering and I can’t remember the last time I properly cleaned my ensuite. I think I may have been pregnant. Gosh, that’s awful isn’t it?

So why can’t I take her up on this generous offer? I don’t know. Maybe I don’t want to admit that I need a bit of help every now and again. I’ll happily let my mum iron hubby’s shirts when she pops round. But I don’t feel like I can ask my mother in law to do things that I feel I should have done.

Maybe it’s because if I have her round so I can clean the ensuite, well, I’ll actually have to clean the ensuite.
