#Blogtober16 Day 11: My favourite animal

October 11, 2016

This prompt took virtually no thought whatsoever. My favourite type of animal is the dog. I’ve loved dogs, ever since we got a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel when I was three years old. I named her Sindy, after the doll (a budget Barbie, if I recall correctly?) and was always vexed when the vets spelled her name with a C instead of an S. Why couldn’t they get something so obvious, right?!

Sindy passed away when I was 12 and as a family we had three lonely, dogless years until my mother finally relented and allowed us to get a rescue dog. He was a black Labrador cross (with some kind of terrier, apparently. I wonder how that worked?!) named Xenos. He was originally called something with racist connotations by the animal sanctuary in deepest, darkest Norfolk so we had to change his name immediately!

Mum wanted something boring, ‘that a person could be called’, like Ben or Tom. She refused my initial suggestion of Chandler Bing (be fair, it was 1998 and I thought it would be hilarious to hear my mother calling, “Bing! Bing!” in the woods. Beats Fenton any day).

So, as a stubborn 15 year-old I did what any loyal X-files fan would do and turned straight to X in a book of baby’s names that I found lying around the house (ah, yes, this is what people did before Google!)

From what I remember, Xenos is a Greek name, which means ‘stronger’. Perfect. And he was. I considered him a ‘proper’ dog after Sindy, who was too precious to chase a ball.

I thought he would live forever, and was utterly heartbroken when he passed away three years ago. Hubby knows that I long for a dog in our family but I am a realist, and know that it’s not the right time for us to have one yet. It is in my five year plan though!

What’s your favourite animal and why?

Yay a fellow dog lover! I was desperate for a dog as a child but we were never allowed to have one (the hamsters that we had instead were a rubbish alternative). We had a Labrador as well I loved him to bits even though he was a bit of a handful!

Haha I was the opposite, never allowed a hamster! But then we had to look after the class hamster at the weekend when I was about six and it put me right off anyway! Labradors are definitely the best breed of dog, in my opinion!
