Pondering Playtime // Cave Baby Invitation to Paint

April 26, 2019

Welcome back to Pondering Playtime, my fortnightly series where I share a favourite picture book and a craft or play activity to go with it. This week, I’ve chosen Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson, and set up a Cave Baby-style painting tuff spot for the girls to enjoy.

Cave Baby – What’s the Story?

Cave Baby is about just that; a baby caveman who, bored one day, finds a paintbrush and pot and sets to work decorating his family’s cave. Unfortunately, his mum and dad don’t appreciate his efforts, but a woolly mammoth family certainly do!

Cave Baby – Invitation to Paint

This activity is inspired by the page in Cave Baby where he finds a brush and pot and starts to paint on the cave walls:

Spots on the hyena!

Stripes on the hare!

Stars on the tiger!

Squiggles on the bear!

Zigzags on the mammoth!

This is lots of fun…

But Mum and Dad are furious,

and say, “Look what he’s done!”

I lined the tuff spot with paper, then painted on some spots, stripes, stars, squiggles and zigzags, as in the story. Then I laid out some paint on plates with a selection of brushes and a stamper, and left the girls to do their own thing.

Cave Baby Painting Activity – What M thought

Cave Baby is another favourite in our house. In fact, we have two copies! M often asks to paint and I’m often reluctant to get the paints out as I hate mess. However, getting the tuff spot out in the garden on its stand was ideal, as it really helped to contain the mess.

The girls really seemed to enjoy this activity and I enjoyed watching them. It was nice to do an activity that allowed them to explore their creativity and was entirely created by them. Of course it didn’t take long for them to make it a sensory experience and once M saw B’s hands in the paint, she immediately started creating handprints!
