Girl or Boy? Old Wives’ Tales

January 15, 2016

Recently I’ve had a lot of people ask me if I know whether I’m having a boy or a girl this pregnancy. When I reply that no, I don’t, as my next scan isn’t until next week, around 60% of them follow up with, ‘any idea what you think you might be having?’

Well, no! I’m don’t have psychic abilities. I usually reply that I have always imagined having a boy but there’s also a 50 percent chance that it’s a girl.

A couple of people have asked me to stand up, turn around etc and predicted what gender they think the baby will be. Apparently I am ‘carrying like a girl’ but gut instinct is a boy. Nothing like covering all bases!

An older lady told me that I’m having a girl because my bum doesn’t stick out far enough! Apparently boys make your bum stick out. Who knew?!

My bump (not bum!) does stick out quite far but I think it’s because I’m pretty skinny and have massive kidneys compared to the average person, so there’s not really anywhere else for the pregnancy to go except out front!

I’ve had a look online to see what gender the other old wives’ tales think I might be having, with the following results:

Carrying high: girl

Carrying all out front: boy

Baby’s heart rate 140+ beats: girl

Wanting salty foods or cheese: boy

Chinese Gender Predictor: girl (or boy, depending which website you use!)

Little or no morning sickness: boy

Age at time of conception + number of month of conception is odd: girl

More prone to headaches: boy

So, there we go. I think those are pretty conclusive results. We’re expecting either a girl or a boy! We’ll just have to wait until the scan next week to find out. Provided the baby faces the right way of course!

  1. The old wives tales make me laugh so much! I’m carrying quite similar with Baby Girl as I did with Toby, all out the front, love. With Toby I couldn’t eat meat, greasy food or salty food yet with baby girl I want all the bacon!! I had nausea and that’s about it with Toby, heartburn, nausea, vomiting migraines, headaches and severe hip and back pain this time. Yet I know people the complete opposite with each sex too so it’s all a guessing game! Good luck with your scan, such a lovely moment xx

Thank you! You can probably guess I haven’t read much into them! The only time we’ll know for definite is when the baby’s born! Looking forward to the scan and finding out the most likely gender though x

My instincts told me it’s a boy very early on this time and the scan confirmed that. It’s a very different pregnancy this time, I’m carrying more neatly and have had an aversion to chocolate when last time I craved it, but I think that’s just down to it being a different pregnancy, not a different gender. Incidentally, with my first pregnancy a colleague said to me, “I can tell you’re having a girl Rebecca, your bottom is bigger!” Charming!

Haha! It’s funny how different people think the same things mean different genders. I don’t feel particularly instinctive really, just going to have to be patient and wait until the scan! Thanks for commenting x
