Welcome back to Pondering Playtime, my fortnightly series where I share a favourite picture book and a craft or play activity to go with it. This week, I’ve chosen *, and I’m sharing a lovely gluten free Easter biscuit recipe to go alongside it.

Spot’s First Easter – What’s the Story?

Spot’s First Easter is similar to the subject of last fortnight’s Pondering Playtime post, We’re Going on an Egg Hunt, in that it’s another lift the flap Easter egg hunt story. However, I think Spot’s First Easter is probably more suited to younger children, as it’s far simpler in terms of both illustration and text. M is 21 months now and she loves it – we had to read it three times in a row just this morning!

Spot’s First Easter – Gluten Free Easter Biscuit Decorating

I came across this amazing gluten free vanilla biscuit recipe, so I decided to make an Easter version with M. I had intended to bake them with her from start to finish, but at 21 months she seems to be terrified of standing on a stool at the kitchen counter! Instead I decided to bake them myself, then let her decorate them. I gave her a bowl of icing and a bowl of sugar sprinkles, showed her how to dip first in the icing, and then in the sprinkles, then left her to her own devices! This turned out to be a brilliant sensory experience for her, although I will definitely be trying to bake with her again in the near future as she gets a little more confident.

Spot’s First Easter – What M thought

I’d definitely recommend this book for children under two. M loved reading it with me, and I’ve even caught her ‘reading’ it independently, turning the pages and lifting the flaps, from start to finish. She also really enjoyed decorating the biscuits, although I’d say it was more a sensory experience than a ‘decorating’ one, really! Obviously, with older children they’ll be able to work with a little more precision and be able to create something more similar to the biscuits that I decorated, which you can see in the first photo of this post. I’m also really looking forward to doing some actual baking with M as she gets a bit older!
