We visited a gluten free fair today that was held in Norwich. I was really excited, hoping to sample some exciting hot food for lunch.
Alas, it wasn’t quite what I’d hoped. There were lots of pre-packaged foods that I’d seen before in the supermarket (so nothing new and exciting there) and the only subtantial hot lunch food available was a jacket potato van. Hardly revolutionary gluten free food!
The holy grail I’d been hoping for, a gluten free sausage roll, was there but not in the hot ready-to-eat gloriousness I was hoping for; I would have to take it home and put it in the oven for 20 minutes. I bought one anyway to have later but was still a bit disappointed!
One thing I did find rather interesting was a stall selling Bolitas; a Brazilian cheese dough ball made with cassava flour. They were very tasty but a bit doughy (I know that sounds stupid for a dough ball but hopefully you know what I mean!)
I intend to look up a recipe and will try to replicate them at home – however a brief Google search has resulted in one recipe containing wheat flour and the others seem to involve frying them (the lady selling them today seemed to be cooking them in a mobile oven) which I think would make them too greasy.
What was positive is that the fair was absolutely heaving, showing that there is a great demand for gluten free so hopefully local restaurants will take note and provide a wider range of gluten fre options.
Have you made any exciting gluten free food discoveries lately? Let me know in the comments!
