Pregnancy Diary Week 28

March 21, 2016

This has been a relatively busy week for appointments for the baby.

On Monday I saw the midwife. From this appointment I learned that I don’t look pregnant from behind, have a very low pubic bone and my bump is measuring almost bang on average for 28 weeks.

The midwife took bloods and told me the symptoms to look out for with pre-eclampsia (dreadful headache which doesn’t go away with paracetamol, weird migrainesque lights in vision; but may be asymptomatic) and choleostasis (seriously itchy hands and feet, often worse at night).

Then on Tuesday I was at the hospital (again!) for my 28 week scan. We were hoping to confirm the gender but of course baby was head up breech so was again described as ‘awkward’ by the sonographer who had a bit of a time of it trying to get all of the measurements that she needed and we still only ended up with a ‘well I think it’s a girl too but we can’t be certain’. I suppose I’ll just have to be happy with that!

In line with the midwife baby seems to be pretty average on my personalised expected growth chart and is currently measuring at 2.9lb. If she carries on like this she’ll weigh around 7.7lb at birth which sounds like a good weight to me. Not too small but not too massive to push out!

The registrar also asked where I’d like to give birth and, to my surprise, said if things continued as well as they have so far then there’s no reason why I can’t birth on the midwifery-led unit. This has given me something to think about as up to now I’d been led to believe I’d have no choice but to have the baby in the consultant-led delivery suite.

So I guess it’s time to start looking into the options so we can make a decision. He reassured me that the consultants are never far away even if we do decide to go for the midwifery-led option. I just worry that if something were to go pear-shaped that the necessary help is to hand as quickly as possible. Food for thought anyway.
Where did you give birth? Did you have the option of a midwife-led unit at your hospital?

I had a later scan in my last pregnancy and I think I’ll miss it with this one. We just had our 20 week scan and also have an awkward bubba, legs crossed the entire time, thankfully we don’t want to know the gender though so it was good for us. Will be exciting to see if she really is a girl on arrival! Thanks for linking up to #MarvMondays. Kaye xo

  3. Fingers crossed for you that all continues to go well, a big choice to make next, go with the professional advise and your heart. #MarvMondays
