Ponderings on Two – Advice from Emily and Indiana

August 15, 2018

Welcome to my new guest post series, Ponderings on Two, where I ask a different blogger and parent of more than one child, to share their experience of having a second child. This week, we hear from Emily, who writes at Emily and Indiana.

Tell me a bit about yourself, your family and your blog.

Hello, I’m Emily! Mama to three little ones aged 4 and under, and married to a wonderful man called Jack. We live in a lovely town in West Kent, where you can usually find us exploring National Trust properties, or drinking hot chocolates in our local Costa. I have been blogging over at Emily and Indiana since 2014, documenting all three littles growing up, my pregnancies and the ups and downs of life as a young family. You can also find us vlogging as a family over at The Peachicks and Us on YouTube!

What age gap did you have between your first and second children? What’s their relationship like?

Indiana was born in November 2013, and we had always planned to have our children close together. What we didn’t expect though, was to fall pregnant by her first birthday! Parker was born in August 2015, making them just 20 months apart.

They are now 4.5 and 3, and have such a lovely bond. They do absolutely everything together – although that does usually mean if one is being a pickle, the other swiftly follows too. They do have a very love / hate relationship at the moment though. They are fantastic playmates, but this usually ends with them bickering after 5 minutes. But if we’re out they are never far apart, and Indiana is fiercely protective of Parker!

What was the hardest thing about having a second child?

Two under two was tough. Both of them needed me, and I found splitting myself between them so difficult! Mum guilt was VERY high too, and I felt as if one was always being left out. Although if I’m honest, this hasn’t really left.

What was the best thing about having a second child?

Probably the most predictable and cheesy answer, but just watching the sibling bond grow between them. Indie was the best big sister, and had so much love for her baby brother!

Were there any products that made life with an older sibling and a newborn easier?

I don’t think I could have lived without my Close Caboo carrier when Parker was a baby! It was so easy to master in my sleep deprived state, and it meant I had a content baby, and free hands to do things around the house or play with Indie. I loved it so much I kept it, and used it again when Lilah was born!

What’s the best piece of advice you could give someone expecting their second baby?

Give yourself time to find your groove – and make sure it suits you and YOUR baby, not anyone else’s. And 1000% embrace those first few lazy weeks, you’ll be rocking life as a mama of two in no time!

Thank you, Emily! You can find Emily over on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
