So, do you know when you’re ovulating?

September 5, 2015

Yep, I was asked this question recently. Around two days after I did, in fact, think I was ovulating. Because I have an app that tells me. Yep, totally on top of that.

Ohhh, how naive I was! (and I feel like a bit of an idiot now, truth be told).

So, I met up with a couple of former colleagues, one of whom is currently on maternity leave with her second child (her baby is 16 weeks and oh-so-cute) and the other has an 18 month old. They are both aware of my desire for parenthood, and my husband’s insistence that we wouldn’t start trying until after we got married.

I’d been married for about three weeks at this point, freshly back from honeymoon. The conversation went something like this:

Friend 1: So, are you pregnant?

Me: Well, if I am it’s like four days so I have no idea!

Friend 1 (laughing): Do you know when you’re ovulating?

Me (knowledgeably): Oh, yes, I have an app that tells me. It’s really good, it plots my periods and tells me my fertile time and the day I’m ovulating.

Friend 1: Nooooo! Not all women ovulate at the same time in their cycle. You need an ovulating kit.

Me (clueless): A what?

Friend 2: An ovulating kit. You wee on a stick and you wait until you get a smiley face and when you do, you jump on your husband! Then you do the deed and sit with your legs in the air.

Friend 1 (to 16 week old, in obligatory sing song baby voice):  And it works, doesn’t it?! Yes it does!

A week later I was having lunch with another friend, discussing a mutual friend who is ‘trying’…

Me: Does she know when she’s ovulating?

Friend: Oh yes, she has an app…

Maybe I’m not the only one after all!
