Pondering Playtime // Supermarket Role Play Tuff Spot

March 15, 2019

Welcome back to Pondering Playtime, my fortnightly series where I share a favourite picture book and a craft or play activity to go with it. This week, I’ve chosen Stanley’s Shop by William Bee, and we’ve been doing some supermarket role play in our tuff spot.

Stanley’s Shop – What’s the Story?

Stanley’s Shop is a simple picture book, which tells the story of Stanley and his day at work at the supermarket, and the customers who shop there. Each customer is looking for something different; can Stanley, and the other supermarket staff, help them find what they need?

Stanley’s Shop – Supermarket Role Play Tuff Spot

For this activity, I simply lined the tuff spot with the gingham tablecloth that I cut to size for our afternoon tea tuff spot, and gathered together some toys from around the house. We bought M a wooden till and food for Christmas, and she also received a shopping basket and fabric fruit and vegetables.

I arranged them in the tuff spot and we read Stanley’s Shop together, filling the basket with the items that the characters in the book were shopping for. Then M put the money in the till, while B got busy examining the shop’s produce!

Supermarket Role Play Tuff Spot – What M thought

M really enjoyed reading the story, finding the different items and putting them into the shopping basket. She was less interested in the role play aspect of playing with the till, but I think that might change as B gets older, and is more able to participate in this type of play. As for B, she was most interested in examining (and trying to eat!) the toy vegetables.
