TImes I’ve been mistaken for being pregnant #1

September 24, 2015

Yes, that’s right, this blog post is an account of the first time I was mistaken for being pregnant. Yes, you’re still right, unfortunately there has been more than one occasion on which this has happened.

I’d just like to point out at this point that I haven’t actually ever been pregnant before. And not to sound smug, but I’m thin, too. I have, however, discovered that I am intolerant to gluten, and whenever I consume anything containing wheat, my tummy balloons. Unfortunately it took a couple of years and several mistaken ‘pregnancies’ for me to work this out.

Ok, I’ll get down to the nitty gritty. Around five years ago I was doing a uni course and had to hand in an assignment.

As I completed the necessary paperwork to hand in my essay, the admin lady started chatting about having exciting times ahead. I just assumed that she was a bit off her rocker and was equating the euphoria of completing several thousand word essay whilst working full time with ‘exciting times’.

She then smiled at the floral belt of my dress (I remember exactly what I was wearing as I loved that dress, and haven’t worn the bloody thing since) and asked, “do you know what you’re having?”

I’m sorry, what?

… just wait for my brain to catch up…

Oh. My. God.

She thinks I’m pregnant.

Not only does she think I’m pregnant, she thinks I’m pregnant enough to know the gender of my unborn child.

How does someone make such a catastrophic series of mistaken assumptions in the space of two minutes?!

“Um, I’m not,” I responded, through gritted teeth.

Her face fell. “You’re not?”

“No, I’m not”.

I handed her my essay and left, waiting for the ground to open up and swallow me. I suspect she felt similarly.

Have you ever been mistaken for being pregnant? For your sake, I hope not, but I’d love to hear your stories! Leave a comment to tell me about it x

  1. […] on from this post and this post, I think this is the most awkward, if not perhaps quite so embarrassing situation […]
