Trying to be healthy when sitting around all day…

April 11, 2017

I know, I shouldn’t moan. It’s brilliant that we’ve finally sorted out Little M’s sleep routine and she’s napping in her cot now. It means that I can get a lot more done. Except, I’m still finding myself spending a lot of time sitting on the sofa. Nap time is the ideal time to get some blogging done, and I tend to get a bit carried away, so an, “oh I’ll just do that…” turns into me sitting on my laptop for the entire duration of her nap – sometimes for as long as 2 or 3 hours!

I’m conscious that I need to spend more time moving around. When I was teaching full time, it wasn’t a problem, as I was almost constantly on my feet, crouching down to speak to children and walking around the room. However, since having Little M and being on maternity leave, I’ve spent significantly more time sitting around. The NHS recommends that you should do at least 30 minutes of exercise, five days per week.

Fortunately, Little M encourages this by happily sitting in her bouncy chair while I tidy the kitchen, provided I sing songs and do a silly dance at the same time! I’m pretty sure this counts as ‘moderately aerobic’ exercise, so I just need to make sure I’m doing it for a solid thirty minutes at a time! I also try to get out for a short walk with the pram each day to try and get both of us some fresh air, so perhaps I just need to up the pace a bit!

I must admit, I am still a fan of the sofa though. I tend to cross my legs or curl up with my legs underneath me though, which I’m pretty sure is bad for my circulation! The other day I got up too quickly and almost fell on my face as my left leg was completely numb. Whoops! Maybe in a few years I’ll invest in an Adjustamatic recliner chair to ease me into a standing position! My parents have them and they’re actually quite fun! (Although that’s probably not their intention…)

What do you do to help yourself be less slovenly? Any tips welcomed!
